Can You Lose Fat During Muscle Body Building?

It’s common to start muscle body building and not experience the results you want at first. What many new bodybuilders overlook is that although they are successfully building muscle, they can’t see it because of their body fat levels.

When muscle is built in a body with excess fat, the result is a fatter-looking body. While that’s not really the result, it can be frustrating because it looks that way. And, most bodybuilders want to look good - it’s one of the reasons they work out.

The question often comes up when there’s excess fat to lose, is it possible to lose fat and build muscle at the same time? After all, that’s what most of us need to do.

While it is possible to do a bit of both at the same time, usually it’s not all that effective. It’s kind of like anything else you do with your time. If you focus on just one thing until you do it well, you’ll reach that goal faster than if there’s a competing interest. When you focus on two or more goals at a time, everything suffers a bit. You really can’t give your full attention to any one thing.

That said, a good approach to this dilemma is to lose some body fat first and then worry about building muscle. However, when taking steps to lose fat you should also take precautions to preserve the lean muscle mass you already have. And that will still involve lifting weights as part of your training program.

Even though the focus will be on fat loss, you will preserve and probably gain some muscle along the way… just not as much as if building muscle was your entire focus. It takes patience and control to be able to put muscle body building on hold while you lose fat. But, the payoff is that when you do build muscle you and everyone else will be able to see it.
