Homeowner Tips on Dealing With Water Leaks in the Basement

September 7th, 2011 · No Comments · Build Muscle

Many peope who witness the devastating effects of flooding wonder what they’d do if their home flooded. Driving through entire neighborhoods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the aftermath of the floods of 2008 made it infinitely clear that flood damage is devastating as about 90% of the homes in certain areas were damaged beyond repair. Water can damage your basement even if you don’t live in a flood plain. There are things you can do to fix the mess that’s created.

One of the first things you should do is turn off power to your basement. You’ll limit the risk of someone getting shocked since water and electricity are dangerous together. You can look for the source of the problem once the water has been turned off. The water will cause even more damage if you don’t do anything quickly. You may need to call your city water department if the leak can’t be plugged. Some water problems can be caused by inadequate storm sewers which is a city concern.

After you’ve exhausted all of your options, you’ll need to remove your possessions from the area. You’ll probably be disappointed since everything will probably be wet and affected by the water. Make some decisions about what articles you want to keep and dry out and those you just want to get rid of. You’ll only be wasting time if you try to save certain things like paper items and books.

You’ll need to try to remove the water after you have cleared the basement out. As long as you allow the water to stay there, it will only cause more damage to your home. Mold and mildew can also start to develop. One of your options is to rent a pump and get rid of the water yourself. However, you could also hire a professional service to do the job for you. The area will also need to be cleaned thoroughly which a professional company will probably be equipped to handle.Doc No.azlcssaeh-sdgfhkl
