There are many alternative workouts for people who are tired of the usual treadmills, jogging and weightlifting routines. If you want to improve your fitness or lose weight, what’s important is that you exercise regularly. It’s therefore possible to work out in a variety of ways and still gain the advantages of exercise.

Rock climbing has become very popular in recent years, and you don’t even need to live near a mountain to do it. If you don’t want to actually climb a big rock, you can look for the next best thing -an indoor rock climbing wall, which are not that hard to find today. Whether you limit yourself to this indoor type of rock climbing or prefer to climb actual rocks, you’ll gain the health benefits of this strenuous activity. Climbing the kind of rope found in gym classes can give you the same type of workout. Rock climbing, or any type of climbing is a way to challenge yourself and have a very beneficial workout.

Some people don’t really like working out with machines at all, and there are many types of exercise that can be done either at home or outdoors without any tools. You could avoid using weights when you do old-style workouts like planks or squats; this can help you along with any calisthenics program. There is a specific term for this - body weight exercises; basically, these exercises use only your body weight and nothing else. Popular fitness guru Mike Fitch has released a program of innovative bodyweight training exercises that was drawn from many different places, including martial arts, gymnastics and acrobatics. Another popular type of exercise is animal movements, which, like traditional Asian martial arts, teach you to move in a natural way like animals do.

If doing exercises in a group at your local gym is not for you, you might want to try a sport that you enjoy playing. Many sports out there do not require a lot of physical impact or strength which means you could play racquetball or ultimate frisbee with someone and get the exercise you need. Instead of finding something new, you might try something that you liked as a child instead.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not an expert, as the point is to get your body moving in a way that’s enjoyable. This is a great way to get exercise, yet at the same time lose yourself in the game so deeply because you enjoy playing it so much.

As you can see, you’re not limited at all when it comes to exercise, as there are lots of alternatives to the more familiar varieties. The real purpose of experimenting with different types of workouts is to find one that you won’t mind doing regularly. While it’s good to stay with a certain type of workout long enough to get benefits, it can also be good for you body to switch, as you’re using different muscle groups and movements.
