Why You Won’t Build Muscle Mass

August 29th, 2008 · No Comments · Build Muscle

Chances are you’ve made an attempt - or several - to build muscle mass in the past. Maybe you’re lifting weights now, hoping to put some muscle on your frame.

Sadly, unless you’re following a proven blueprint for building muscle it’s likely you’ll fail in your attempt… unless you’re genetically inclined to gain mass anyway. It seems like those guys can just show up at the gym and get huge.

It’s really not your fault because there’s so much conflicting information about how to build muscle available online, on the magazine racks and at the gym. It can get really confusing and it’s tough to know who to listen to. Experts have different opinions on everything.

By reading or listening to just 2 sources of information, you’ll probably get opposite views on the best muscle building practices. And much of this seemingly contradictory advice is valid - for different people.

The trick is to find the expert who knows how to do exactly what YOU want to do and is willing to teach you how to do it yourself.

If you’re skinny and have a hard time building muscle, don’t listen to the genetically gifted strong-man down at the gym. He simply doesn’t understand you and what it takes for someone like you to gain muscle mass.

Instead, find someone who used to be skinny and has figured out how to build muscles. In other words, the person you listen to must be able to walk the walk - and prove through experience they know what they’re talking about.

Once you find this relevant source of information, follow the program closely. Don’t just read it, do what it says!

Here’s one of the biggest mistakes made when starting a muscle building program… setting your goals based on what you want to accomplish rather than ongoing performance.

The problem you’ll face is this - if you fail to set performance goals, your goal is not something within your control. You can control the fact that you’ll get up and hit the gym each morning next week.

However, you can’t control that you’ll gain 30 pounds of muscle in 3 months or whatever - you’ll gain it when you gain it.

Overall goals are important but you don’t want to stop there. If you do, you’ll find yourself in “wishing” or “hoping” mode rather than taking the planned action that will lead you to the results you want. Setting performance goals based on solid, proven information and then following them will get you where you want to be.

Would you believe there are 19 other ways to screw up and sabotage your efforts to build muscle mass - unless you learn what they are and avoid them at all costs?
