In July 1968, John B. Calhoun, an American research psychologist, once did a very splendid research on the effect of open space on your mind. The test, as expected, involved rats, not humans however his reports were universally regarded to be a applicable. Here’s what he did.

He put 4 pairs of mouse into a perfect universe. There’re no predators, no lack of food or drinks and obviously, no scarcity of mating partner. Essentially these rats had everything they want - with the exception of space.

At first, everything looks just great. The rats lived as they are suppose to be. Their community grew very quickly, multiplying around every fifty-five days. Pretty soon, when the population of the rats reached 620, the area he was placing them in become overflowing. That was day 315 of the test. Surprisingly, the population began to drop since then… to the point where the last surviving birth was at day 600. At the time, in between day 315 to day 600, the rats behaved erratically.

No longer do males take care of their territory and females. No longer do they occupy themselves in courtship or physical encounter. Alternatively they become anti-social, and clean themselves. As a result of their lack of scars and healthy skin, these group of males were dubbed “the charming ones”.

The girls, on the other hand, became more and more offensive, reluctant to give birth and expelled their young before weaning was complete. After day 600, the population began to reduce into extinction.

Seems familiar? Needless to say, these rats are awfully unhappy during this period of time. Did the insufficient space and advancing population density altering your psychology? Who knows? Perhaps so, maybe not. However assuming that you’re similar me, you want to find out.

Try this out: At worst once a week, go to an open space. Be it a open land or out of town. A lot of people feel relieved, kind of a liberation when in open space. No mental exercises or brain training exercises can replace this.
