FDA Compliance Is Imperative For Harmless Tanning

The rise in media coverage of our favourite celebrities has had several impacts on how modern men and women view themselves and the perfect body. The size zero debate has seen mixed results. There are some brands that wave the flag for normal bodies whatever shape or size, resisting the stalemate of the catwalk to stop anyone with a healthy BMI on the runway. We have altered our idea of the idea image in other ways apart from size as well.

A woman with a tan used to be seen as indecent with little class or virtue. We now see a tan as an essential beauty accessory, like nail varnish or mascara. This can lead to serious problems in terms of health and confidence, with girls at a younger and younger age changing what they naturally look like in order to fit into the new perma-tanned, super thin stereotype that fills the pages of magazines.

Tanning pills and injections are the latest craze to hit the UK claiming to boost our colour from the inside out. Someone taking high levels of colour additives that are used in these pills can experience serious health problems. The Food and drug Administration FDA has the power to destroy tanning pills as their ingredients and usage do not comply with their rules.

Canthaxanthin is the additive predominantly used in so called tanning pills. It is mainly used in food but in very small amounts. When too much is taken it is deposited around the body. Whilst this will leave you with a patchy tan, it could also have very serious side effects. One is canthaxanthin-induced retinopathy, where crystals form in the eyes. It may take years for you to be able to see properly again, even after the crystals have been removed. Other side effects include itching, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea.

Tanning pills are not in line with FDA Compliance and as such they are illegal wherever the FDA regulations are in place. Companies who do try to sell the pills can have legal action taken against them and other non criminal punishment.
