On a hot day I’m usually ready for a nice cold treat by the time the afternoon rolls around. Making a frozen fruit smoothie with some strawberries, a few banana slices and some low-fat yogurt and milk sounds like the perfect solution. It tastes good and is actually good for me. Let’s take a look at exactly why this cool drink is so good for us.
Let’s start with the frozen fruit. You know how healthy eating plenty of fruit is. There are plenty of vitamins and other nutrients in it. It’s also beneficial to use frozen instead of fresh fruit. The produce is harvested when it has the most vitamins and nutrients. Some experts say that consuming frozen fruits and vegetables is even better than fresh, since the fresh produce we pick up at the grocery store is already several days old. It’s been picked, processed and shipped to the store. In that time, many of the nutrients (and vitamins) start to go away. Using frozen fruit in your smoothie makes it even healthier.
Milk and Yogurt - Next we’ll take a closer look at the dairy ingredients for our frozen fruit smoothies. They are low-fat yogurt and skim milk. Both of them have quite a bit of calcium that our bones need. If you are a woman, you definitely want to take advantage of this. As we age, calcium leeches out of our bones and we need to make a conscious effort to replace it to prevent osteoporosis later on in life. Smoothies are also great for kids for the same reason. They benefit from the calcium boost just as much since their growing bodies require plenty of it.
Both yogurt and milk also contain protein which plays an important factor in muscle building and maintenance. It is particularly important to get a lot of of protein when you are on a weight loss plan or most of your weight loss will be in muscle instead of body fat.
Don’t Forget About The Hydration Factor - Since smoothies have quite a bit of liquid in them from the milk and all the juice in the fruits, they are a great way to hydrate. Without plenty of water our bodies can not function and during a hot summer day we tend to lose even more than usual of the precious liquid. Smoothies are my favorite way to help us stay hydrated - of course you should still make sure you drink plenty of plain water as well.
The fact that they are frozen also helps our bodies cool down. And that’s just one of the many reasons why drinking a frozen fruit smoothie is a good idea. Another is that they are healthy, relatively low in calories and taste very very yummy. All this makes it the perfect summer treat.
